Why alerts keep sending after you turn something off

Turning off Auto Nurture, a tag, or a Template stops new alerts being created but not the ones already running. How to actually stop each type.

In RealScout, turning off the setting that creates alerts does not stop the alerts it already created. This article explains that rule and gives you the exact way to stop each type.

If you have switched something off and watched a contact keep receiving emails, nothing is broken. You turned off the factory, and the machines it already built are still running.

The one rule behind all of it

RealScout separates the thing that creates alerts from the alerts themselves. Auto Nurture, tags, and Templates are creators. Listing Alerts, Market Activity Alerts, and Home Value Alerts are what they create.

Once an alert exists it is independent, with its own schedule and its own on/off switch. Turning off a creator stops the next alert from being made. It does not reach back and remove the ones already made.

Caution: after changing any setting below, go to the contact and turn off the alert directly. That second step is the one most people skip.

You disabled Auto Nurture and emails kept coming

Disabling Auto Nurture stops it creating new alerts. It does not stop alerts that already exist, and it does not remove the contact from Nurtured status. Listing Alerts, Market Activity Alerts, and Home Value Alerts all operate independently of Auto Nurture.

  1. Click Contacts in the left sidebar.

  2. Click the contact's name to open their profile on the Email Alerts tab.

  3. Review every active alert type: Listing Alerts, Home Value Alerts, and Market Activity Alerts.

  4. Change each alert's schedule to Disable, or uncheck the box under Enabled?.

The contact stops receiving emails once every alert type is disabled, not when Auto Nurture is switched off. For more on why the Nurtured label persists, see Why do contacts still appear as nurtured after I disable Auto Nurture?

You turned on Skip Home Value Alerts and they kept sending

Skip Home Value Alerts is not retroactive. It prevents Auto Nurture creating new Home Value Alerts going forward. Any Home Value Alert that already exists continues sending until you delete it individually. If a contact is still receiving one, that alert was created before you enabled the toggle.

  1. Go to Automations → Auto Nurture, then Update Settings, and confirm Skip Home Value Alerts is on. This stops future creation only.

  2. Go to Email Alerts → Home Value Alerts.

  3. Find the contact or property address.

  4. Delete the alert.

Deleting is the only complete stop for a Home Value Alert. See Home Value Alert Overview for how these alerts are created in the first place.

You removed a tag and the wrong alert stayed

Removing a tag stops future contacts from matching. It does not remove the alert that tag already created. This one is worth catching early, because a broad tag like Buyer or Seller can assign the same Template to hundreds of contacts at once, and correcting the tag afterward fixes none of them.

  1. Open the affected contact from Contacts.

  2. Go to the Email Alerts tab.

  3. Find the incorrect alert and change its schedule to Disable.

To handle many contacts at once, open the Listing Alerts dashboard, select the checkbox near Contact to choose all contacts, click More Actions, and select Disable Listing Alerts. Full steps are in How to Disable a Listing Alert.

Four more places the same rule applies

You edited a Template and existing alerts did not change. Once an alert is created from a Template it becomes independent of that Template, so later changes never reach it. Build a new Template with the corrected criteria, attach the tag to it, delete the old Template, then save a new alert on any contact who already has the old one.

You removed an Action tag and the action stayed. Action tags fire once, at the moment the tag is applied. If a contact was archived by an Action tag, removing that tag will not unarchive them. Go to the Archived tab in Contacts and unarchive them there. See FAQ: Tag Automations, Tags & Templates.

You switched your CRM back to tag-based importing. Switching the setting back stops new contacts syncing, but does not remove contacts already brought over, and there is no self-serve way to undo an all-contacts import. Those contacts can be archived or deleted individually. Choose tag-based importing first when you are unsure, because adding contacts is far easier than removing them.

You enriched a contact and the old details came back. Contact Enrichment saves to RealScout only and does not sync to any connected CRM. The next sync overwrites the enriched values with the older CRM record. After accepting an enrichment, click Follow Up Boss Contact Link at the top of the contact profile and update the same fields there.

The complete stop for one contact

To stop a contact receiving everything without hunting through alert types, archive them. Archiving is the action that stops a contact receiving any further notifications.

  1. Open the contact's profile from Contacts.

  2. Click the three-dot menu.

  3. Select Archive.

Archiving stops all notifications at once.

Unarchiving works the same way in reverse. It returns the contact to your active list but does not turn their alerts back on. Re-enable those from the contact's Email Alerts tab.

I disabled Auto Nurture. Why is my contact still getting emails?

Listing Alerts, Market Activity Alerts, and Home Value Alerts operate independently of Auto Nurture. Disabling it stops new alerts being created but leaves existing ones running. Open the contact in Contacts, go to the Email Alerts tab, and disable each active alert, or archive the contact to stop everything at once.

I turned on Skip Home Value Alerts. Why is one still sending?

That alert was created before you enabled the toggle. Skip Home Value Alerts only prevents new ones. Go to Email Alerts → Home Value Alerts and delete the existing alert. Deleting is the only complete stop for a Home Value Alert.

I fixed my Template. Why did nothing change for my contacts?

Alerts become independent of a Template the moment they are created, so later Template changes never reach them. The corrected Template applies only to alerts created from that point on. For contacts who already have the old alert, save a new alert on the contact directly.
